Over the last couple of months Spam has become and increasing
annoyance to the world as a whole and unfortunately there is little that will
totally stop it. About the best you can hope for is to hamper it by blocking it
as much as possible and to try to make it less annoying. The best first line
of attack against Spam and viruses is at the user end level with a personal Spam
filter and virus protection. The reason this it the best level for such
filters is it gives each person the power apply as much or as little filtering
to suit their personal needs.
The truth of the matter is...when it's done on a server level
"mail is lost" and it slows down your email service. If a person gets 10
pieces of mail a day...and there are 100 people on the server getting the same
amount then the email server has to scan 1000 piece of mail. That slows
everyone's email and they all have to live with the same filter set-up. If
you add that with the increased instability it adds to the server (possibly more
crashes and down time) the end user level is the most beneficial for all
concerned.
After doing a lot of research we feel that mailwasher
is one of the best filters for Spam out there...and they have a free
version. The free version will only service one email
account however. It can be downloaded here http://www.mailwasher.net
What
we are doing on the server level is to try to block the Spam and viruses at
their source (and notifying the mail server it's coming from of the abuse) which
is fairly successful but if the spammer is good they know to bounce it off many
servers till they get shut down so blocking them all is difficult. Most of
the Spam is coming into the USA from overseas right now and a lot of the servers
over seas are small companies that don't affect our clients and operations to
any degree so blocking a whole company is not a problem...but if you talk about
Roadrunner, AT&T or Comcast it is a different situation. It would affect to
many people to totally block these servers...again another reason for personal
Spam filters and virus protection.
Here at Cottonwoods Creations we do understand your
frustration. Our own personal sites are here right along with yours so we
have the same problems as everyone else has. We are taking an active stand to
try to stop as much of this annoyance as possible. Should you have repeat
offenders please copy the email header to notepad and send it to us and we will
do all we can at our end to shut them down.
One last thing... Many of the free website submission sites
out there are SELLING YOUR ADDRESS!! So please be selective of who you
use.
